The Old Fashioned was originally called the Whiskey Cocktail. Bartenders began tweaking the recipe with various liqueurs and other ingredients. Some patrons grew tired of these new recipes and began asking for a whiskey cocktail made the Old-Fashioned way.
Today, bartenders have created Old Fashioned cocktails with spirits other than whiskey, see recipes below. Regardless of the recipe, the instructions to make the cocktails are the same.

- For a Brandy Old Fashioned, garnish with a Maraschino cherry and orange peel.
