Mulled Wine, German Glühwein

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 10 to 20 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 750 milliliter bottle dry red wine
  1. Bring water and sugar to a boil to dissolve the sugar.
  2. Reduce heat, add whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, and orange juice, then simmer for 1 minute.
  3. Reduce the heat further and add wine, and barely simmer for 20 minutes to several hours.
  4. Ladle into small mugs.
