It is believed that the Manhattan cocktail was created in the late 1860s or early 1870s in New York City at the Manhattan Club. Several recipes appear below. The instructions to make the cocktails are the same.
Instructions
- Chill a coupe glass to serve “up” or a lowball glass to serve “on the rocks”.
- In a mixing glass, add all ingredients.
- Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir for 20-30 seconds until well-chilled and diluted.
- Strain into the coupe or lowball glass filled with ice.
- Garnish: dark cherry and lemon twist.
Classic Manhattan
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 oz sweet vermouth
- 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
Perfect Manhattan
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
- 1/2 oz dry vermouth
- 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
Southern Comfort Manhattan
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 oz sweet vermouth
- 2 oz Southern Comfort whiskey
Rob Roy (Scottish) Manhattan
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 oz sweet vermouth
- 2 oz blended Scotch
Bobby Burns (Scottish) Manhattan
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 oz sweet vermouth
- 1 oz blended Scotch
- 1/2 oz Bénédictine or Drambuie
Harvard Cocktail
A Manhattan with cognac instead of bourbon or rye whiskey
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 oz sweet vermouth
- 2 oz cognac
